A very easy gravel, mostly level, cycling/walking trail with views towards the Paparoa Mountain Range and coast. If you are just doing a day trip, start at Westport and walk toward Tauranga Bay, using a shuttle service to take you back to the start. Or, do the Cape Foulwind to Tauranga Bay loop, which is much prettier, but involves walking up/down some hills. The Kawatiri Trail is made up of eight sections, with multiple access points. You can do a multi-day trip, doing the entire trail, or just do the sections one at a time. The entire route meanders a mix of rugged cliffs, crashing seas, wildlife, forest, suspension bridges, boardwalks, pristine wetlands, shelters and interpretive signage brimming with remarkable stories and local secrets. With views from mountains to sea, the trail traverses highlights such as Carters Beach, Cape Foulwind, Tauranga Bay, Ōkari, Tōtara and Charleston.
