Angelus Hut at 1,650 metres, sits on the shores of Lake Angelus surrounded by spectacular mountain views. From May to October in most years, the lake is frozen, snow blankets all four routes, and you may have to dig your way to the hut. (You need to reserve a bunk space online.) Do it as a loop walk, spending one night at Angelus hut. For a two night trip, I would suggest one of the following: 1) Spend a second night at Angelus Hut and do a day trip to the top of Mt Angelus or Sunset Saddle, and then hike out back the way you came or via Speargrass hut. 2) Spend your second night at Hopeless hut as you loop back to the start of the walk via Travers Valley/River and Lake Rotoiti shoreline.
