The north side of the Awaroa Inlet. If doing a hike from Totaranui to Awaroa Hut, at low tide you will walk across the inlet from here toward Awaroa Hut. Usually there will be other hikers waiting for the tide to go down, so you can watch to see how deep the water is before you cross. If their shorts are getting wet, or they are holding their backpacks above their head, they are going too early. (Or perhaps too late!) Even if you are doing a one-day out-and-return lunch hike from Totaranui to Awaroa Lodge, you should have more than enough time for the crossing, lunch at Awaroa Lodge, and the return crossing, if the water is mid-thigh or lower. You will definitely want shoes/sandals you can wear and get wet while crossing. There are lots of sharp sea shells and gooey mud on the crossing! It is not all nice sand.
