Hike from Haslibergoase to Berggasthaus. Step 1 is getting to Meiringen from Haslibergoase. Walk the 5km? Taxi? Hotel shuttle to town? Starting the hike from Meiringen: Distance: 20 to 24 km Elevation gain: 1,500 meters Duration: 7 to 8 hours This hike is a segment of the Via Alpina that branches toward First from Grosse Scheidegg. Route: Meiringen, Reichenbach Falls, Zwirgi, Rosenlaui, Grosse Scheidegg, Berggasthaus First. Highlights: Reichenbach Falls (famous for Sherlock Holmes), the historic Hotel Rosenlaui, dramatic views of the Wetterhorn and Rosenlaui Glacier. At Grosse Scheidegg take the trail northwest (turn right) to Berggasthaus First, about 1.5 hours off the main trail. If you want to experience the area without the full 8-hour climb, take a bus from Meiringen to Schwarzwaldalp or Grosse Scheidegg and hike only the upper portion to First. There is a bus between Meiringen and Grosse Scheidegg that saves about 1350 metres in altitude. There is a bus between Grosse Scheidegg and Grindelwald that saves about 900 metres in altitude.
