Tubing down the Salt River is a popular, refreshing summer activity in the Tonto National Forest, just northeast of Mesa, Arizona. Tubers float down a gentle, meandering section of the river on inflatable inner tubes, enjoying desert views and potential wild horse sightings. Summer holiday weekends can be very busy, with hundreds of other tubers enjoying the river. Most groups will have an extra tube which carries an icechest full of drinks. Well prepared groups will have floating stereo systems they built just for, "tubing down The Salt." For a flat fee (about US$30), you get a tube rental and a shuttle bus ride that drops you off at launch points and picks you up at the end of your float. If you bring your own tubes, you need two vehicles. You park one at the exit point, and use the other to drive to the launch area. You will also need to buy an $8 Tonto Daily Pass to park your vehicle at forest recreation sites.
