An 11km out-and-return hike with about 300 metres of elevation gain. The hike ends at the Maitai Caves. (But I have only been in one of the cave entrances.) The cave is muddy and a little tricky to walk and climb through. The first chamber will probably have some ropes you can use to help get down to the floor of the first chamber. The first chamber is not that interesting. The second chamber has a few stalactites, stalactites, and columns, but getting to the second chamber is another climb up and down some slippery muddy rocks using ropes that might be there. You'll want to bring some extra cloths and a headlamp if you intend on going in the cave. You'll want both hands free to climb down and up the rocks, so a headlamp is better than a handheld flashlight, or a cellphone light. The hike itself goes through some really pretty native bush. It is a rocky and rooty trail. (Nothing like the "Great Walks" that you might be used to.) The track follows a river for much of the way. Be aware there are a couple stream crossings. Depending on the amount of rain, and how good your balance is, you might be able to "rock hop" with the aid of some walking sticks, and keep your feet dry. Worst case, plan on having to take your shoes off a couple times and walk through a few inches of water. (Mid-calf level. Below knee level.) So bring a towel or T-shirt to dry off your feet.
