The Jimmy Lee Creek trail can be done as a 3.7 km loop with 185 metres climb, or as an out-and-return. Be aware that if you do it as a loop, you will be walking back for about a kilometer on the footpath next to the road. Once I get to the road, I usually just turn around and do the hike in reverse, making for 370 meters of climb. There is a bird viewing hide near the start of the track that volunteers keep stocked with fresh fruit and sugar water. You can often see lots of birds at the feeders. There are seashell fossils along the trail in several places. If you are visitor to the Nelson area, there are other, better, local hikes you can do, but if you are a local Nelsonian, this is a great hike for a quick evening workout. It’s a walk with a bit of everything, all just minutes from Richmond’s town centre.
