Our island sanctuary is just an hour from Auckland, but it feels like another world. It’s a place where curious explorers can uncover fascinating stories and beautiful beaches. Experience first hand the conservation of iconic New Zealand species. Rotoroa Island is a predator free sanctuary for wildlife and home to endangered native species including kiwi, tīeke (saddleback), takahē, pāteke and skinks. Rotoroa was closed to the public for more than 100 years, as home to NZ’s first addiction treatment centre. Today, following an extensive transformation, it is accessible to everyone as an island sanctuary where visitors can connect with nature and come to better understand conservation. Come and see endangered species in their natural habitat, visit our award-winning museum, explore the network of walking trails or relax with a swim at one of four beautiful beaches. Just an hour by ferry from downtown Auckland, come and escape to somewhere truly special for the day, or overnight. Business hours: Open most days from dawn until dusk Months of operation: All months of the year
