A 11 km out-and-return (5.5 km one-way) hike to the top of Mount Malita. About four to five hours, and about 750 metres vertical climb. Great views and an old 2-bed hut to visit. To get to the summit you can either take the signposted Summit Road or Old Malita Road. Summit road is more out in the sun, and Old Malita Road is steeper, but has more shade. After having lunch at the summit, visit the hut that is a three minute walk along the ridge to the south. This is Nelson City Council land, not DOC (Department of Conservation) land, so the hut is not well maintained, and sometimes is stocked with unusual items. (The longdrop toilet at the hut is not for the faint of heart.) I would not recommend this to visitors to the area because there are better, more scenic, hikes in the area. But, if you are a local, this is a good day trip if you have not done it before.
