Enjoy the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Southern Alps on one of the country’s best day hikes. The Hooker Valley Track is the most iconic walk in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. So, if you only have time to do one walk, this should be the one. This winding 10km track follows the Hooker Valley floor to Hooker Lake and generally takes 3-4 hours to complete, including the return. Highlights include views of Mueller Glacier and Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain. In Spring, walkers will glimpse the Mount Cook buttercup, the world’s biggest buttercup. Weather can change quickly in alpine environments so be prepared for variable weather conditions. This track requires the right preparation including sturdy footwear, warm and waterproof clothing, sun protection, food and water. In winter months, walking poles and micro-spikes are recommended.
