Totaranui is a huge campground with a beautiful golden sand beach. It is very busy during the summer holidays. (Christmas through end of January.) The campground has toilets and very basic cold showers. Although it can hold almost a thousand people, the camping spots are spread out into seven or eight large, separate grassy bays, separated by native trees, that hold about 90 people per bay. A couple of the bays have a toilet/shower building at the back of the bay. If you are tramping, there are better options, but if you are car camping, especially with young children, it is a great spot. There are lots of day hike options from Totaranui, so you could easily spend a few days there. If the tides are right for an out-and-return hike from Totaranui to Awaroa Lodge for lunch, I would really recommend doing that. If you just come to Totaranui just for the day, and do not stay the night, it is free. Otherwise, there is a per person booking fee that can be paid online.
