The Grampians is a local hill at the edge of town in Nelson. The 1.5 to 2.5 hour out-and-return walk is about 6 km, with about 380 metres of altitude gain. It gives you nice views of Tasman bay, Nelson, Richmond, and the Western Ranges. (Mt Arthur and other mountains to the west of Nelson.) If you are looking for a quick workout starting near Nelson, it is a good choice if you want something more than just doing the Centre of New Zealand. There are multiple routes to the top of The Grampians. The routes closest to the Nelson CBD (Central Business District) have the least trees and native bush cover. (Start from Fairfield House at the south end of Trafalgar Street.) The track going up from the southwest side of the mountain has the most native bush cover, so it is the better option on a hot day. (Start from Market Street in Bishopdale.) If you are Nelson local, this is a hike you should do. If you are a visitor who is only in the area a few days, there are better hikes.
