A 12 km, 440 metre elevation gain, (7 mile, 1,400 foot) round trip hike from Wainui Bay to Whariwharangi Hut and beach. You can do this in half a day, or spend a few hours hanging out at the beach. Whariwharanghi Hut is a historic hut and is worth a visit. (You need reservations if you want to spend the night here. There is also tent camping.) After the 6km walk, 220 metre elevation gain, from Wainui Bay to Whariwharangi beach there are a few other walks you can add to make the trip take the whole day: Separation Point, Mutton Cove, Gibbs Hill, and others. (See the links.) Please be aware the start of the hike, uphill from Wainui Bay to the top of the hill is in the sun and not very interesting, although you get some nice views of Golden Bay and Wainui Bay on the way up the hill. The pretty part of the hike is the Whariwharangi side of the hill.
