Salisbury Lodge/Hut is a tramping (backpacking) hut in Kahurangi National Park. It is a 3 to 5 hour walk from Flora Carpark. You follow two rivers, walking through beautiful native bush, past some interesting open air camping spots built into the rocks, eventually breaking out of the bush onto tussock covered tablelands. Day trips from Salisbury Hut include Balloon Hut, a very cool loop trail called, "The Potholes", or some caving if you have the equipment and experience to do that. It is even enjoyable in the winter if the weather is sunny. Friends of mine who have done this hike have often said it was the highlight of their trip to New Zealand. The road to Flora carpark can usually be done in an ordinary two-wheel-drive car, but if the road is in especially bad shape, a four wheel drive car would be better. I have seen two-wheel-drive vans and Toyota Priuses (Prii?) in the parking lot, so it really depends on how comfortable you are driving on steep potholed roads.
