One of New Zealand's most memorable one-day adventures for fit mountain bikers. It follows the path of New Zealand’s first railway route, making it one of the country’s most accessible alpine rides. Part of the ride has long fast flowing sections that are an adrenaline rush. A half-day (42km, 1000 metre climb) mountain bike ride through a wide variety of terrain: timber forest, native bush, and a Mars-like, red dirt "mineral belt" above the tree line. You should have plenty of water and bicycle repair tools if you do this. The trail is not steep, but just the climbing part of the ride takes an hour or two, depending on your fitness. The trail is a loop, so you can start from a few different locations, depending upon where you want to park, and whether logging operations have closed any trails. The Nelson Mt Bike Club is a good source of information, as is Gravity bike shop in the Nelson CBD (Central Business District.) You can rent bikes and e-bikes in Nelson.
